Some 40 years ago Hurst Players bought an old building and converted it into the theatre you know and love. Now it has gone 'dark' and the builders have moved in to carry out the long-awaited refurbishment of the auditorium, bringing it up to the same high standard as the Box Office was a year ago. The old seats were dismantled and the auditorium stripped by a Hurst Players working party the weekend before the contractor arrived.
A week later and the floor has been removed, the walls stripped and relined, and the relining of the ceiling is well under way. Openings are appearing for the new air vents and various electrical cables are being run in.
Wall and ceiling linings are complete - now the plastering begins. And floor levels are being readjusted.
With plastering finished the construction of the tiered flooring is well underway. The first coat of deep red paint is being applied, and the four air-conditioning units are up! The new heating, cooling and ventilation system will run on renewable energy, saving a whopping 60% on operating costs, as well as being ecologically responsible.
The new floor is substantially complete now, and the walls are painted. Steel posts are being fitted for the new handrails.
The tiered seating is going in, row by row. Thanks to Sussex Seating for doing a great job for us on those, and to Closewall for managing a very successful refurbishment. Before the end of the month, the auditorium is complete. We hope that audiences will love the space as much as we do!
As a charity we must be very prudent with our limited funds, and you can still play an important part in helping us to put the finishing touches to the auditorium.
There are several things in the category of "Wouldn't it be nice if...", but which we could manage without if we had to.
A gift of £500 is not a lot of money these days, but a wonderful way to be remembered by literally thousands of grateful visitors to the Theatre. Please contact us if you would like to have a no-obligation chat about this.
